Doyle is inspired to write on the topic of the heart because his son was born with three out of four chambers in his heart. One moment you could think you are at the top of the world but any moment you could be at rock bottom just like the hummingbird only inches from death. He is trying to show that life can be just that fragile. Quickly, he changes to explain how fragile this is. fly more than five hundred miles without pausing to rest"(Doyle 273). In the second paragraph he continues explaining their talents such as being able to "dive at sixty miles an hour. He spaces out these ideas to give time to the reader time to think with just a single gap in between each paragraph. With each piece of information the reader learns about the incredible hummingbird with the heart the size of a pencil eraser. He explains that the title means flying jewels. Within the opening paragraph he speaks in detail about the heart of a hummingbird. ![]() Doyle also explains about blue whales to bring in the topic of love. He still is stressing the fact that human life is precious throughout this passage. With comparisons of the hummingbird and tortoise heartbeat speed, Doyle is commenting that there are different ways to live your life. He uses metaphors through this passage to comment on the life humans live and how we love. Brian Doyle has an interesting approach that he used in his passage, "Joyas Voladoras". ![]()
